Visions of Your Home Office
|
This month we celebrate National Organize Your Home Office Day. It’s time to make a date
with yourself to get your home office under control. Learn about setting up your office and
establishing key routines.
Your office is planning central for your business and likely the management of your household
related business. An organized office can be the key difference in you being able to take
advantage of an opportunity. It is the place where you need to work on your business to make
sure you can work in your business.
Having an organized office makes things easier stay on top of important papers, better
manage your schedule, direct the flow of key projects and prevent delayed decisions
Define your space
What space is available to work in a productive manner? Where will you work? Even if it’s
only a desk and a chair in the corner, call it your office and make sure it’s well stocked. Ideal
locations have natural and artificial lighting, space for supplies and room to work.
Figure out how much space is necessary for the things you’ll need to get your work done. Plan
how to handle your incoming items. Mail/paper/email/calls/requests must go somewhere.
Make your space a place you want to be. Make it appealing by adding decorative touches such
as motivational pictures (family, vacation photos).
Have equipment that works for you
Take the time to invest in getting the equipment you need to work efficiently and
productively. Set up a station with your computer, phone, fax at good angles that makes your
work flow.
Pay attention to proper ergonomics and good lighting to prevent injuries, back pain and
headaches. Get a chair with adequate support. Place your desk at the right place with
sufficient room, and make sure it’s at the right height for you and have enough lighting for the
work area.
Treat it like work
Keep Office Hours
Schedule your time and block time each day for important tasks. Schedule breaks and take
advantage of your peak times for productivity. Some of us are night owls, while others get
their best work done in the pre-dawn hours. Whatever your peak time, use it for your priority
projects. Identify a 2-3 hour timeframe when you can really focus on getting your work done.
Set boundaries with family & friends
When you’re at home, it’s easy for family and friends to assume you have a lot of time on
your hands and are available to run their errands. Set your “business” hours as best you can
and enforce them. Let family and friends know when its okay—and when it’s not, for them to
interrupt. If necessary, put a sign on the door “Work in Progress” so they know when it’s not
a good time to disturb you.
Establish and maintain routines
Even though you’re running a small operation, it’s important to put processes in place that will
help keep your business running. Establish routines that will make sure you don’t forget to
attend to business maintenance and business building activities such as administrative tasks
(bill paying) marketing, networking.
