Can you answer yes to the following statements?
- If something happened to me tomorrow and I ended up in a hospital, my family would
know my wishes if I couldn't speak for myself.
- I have already selected a trusted family member or friend as guardian if I weren't able
to take care of my children.
- If someone committed identity fraud or theft against me, I would know what to do.
If you were able to answer "Yes" to these statements, you're in great shape. If you couldn't, I
urge you to take steps to better protect yourself and your family by developing a Will or
seeking Identity Theft protection.
Why a Will?
Reports indicate that the single best way to protect your wishes for your family, children and
assets is to have a Will in place. Studies show that 7 of 10 people do not have a Will in
place, but unfortunately 10 of 10 people will need one.
Now you might think it's a morbid thing or that it's too expensive, but that's not necessarily
true. The preparation of a Will can be one of the most loving and considerate things you
can do for your family, and it can be affordable.
So What's the Difference between a Living Will and a Will?
A Living Will lets doctors and other caregivers know your wishes in matters such as
resuscitation (DNR), life support, food and water provisions. A Health Care Proxy
indicates what health procedures you consent to or don't.
A Will allows you to decide what happens to your belongings, assets and valuables and
more importantly lets you assign a guardian for any children under 18. Family heirlooms,
estate jewelry, all sentimental items can be passed on to family members and friends per
your wishes
- It's important to note that if you haven't designated a guardian in a legally binding
document, it's the State that will decide who takes care of your children.
Derek Martin, an Independent Associate for Pre-Paid Legal Services® , Inc. says: “Life
events happen very quickly, and many times, with no advance warning. One of the most
important things we can do to protect ourselves and our families is to have a Will prepared”
In addition to having a Will prepared, he also recommends taking steps to protect yourself in
the event of Identity Fraud, which is the #1 fastest growing white collar crime today!
Protecting Your Identity
Many people will have their Identity stolen and won't know about it until months or years
later. According to a report released in January of 2006 by the Federal Trade Commission
(FTC), identity theft constituted 37% of all fraud complaints in 2005.
And like most crimes, Identity Theft does not discriminate...everyone is at risk.
Statistics show that the highest rate of identity theft occurs between December and
January...more than any other time frame during the year. It is estimated that over 500,000
people nationwide will have their identity stolen or compromised in some form during this
period of time.
Here are the 5 Popular Targets of Identity Theft Crimes
- Driver’s License Identity
- Medical Identity
- Social Security Number Identity
- Character Identity
- Financial/Credit Identity
“Having your identity stolen can be very devastating. It can cost you thousands of dollars
and many years to restore your identity. Choose to protect your identity, now” says Derek
Martin.
To properly protect yourself, it's recommended that you have a comprehensive continual
monitoring system that alerts you for any credit activity beyond just a credit or fraud alert.
You also need a system that restores your identity in the event it has been stolen.
So if you've got kids, a name or even a bunch of pretty pictures that you don't want
scrapped, give yourself and your family some peace of mind. Make the choice to protect
yourself and your family by having your Will prepared and protect your Identity before it is to
late.
