Putting Off Procrastination
This week is National Procrastination week. No, we’re not celebrating procrastination—it’s time
to examine the ways that we procrastinate and put together a plan to beat it.

So what is procrastination?
The dictionary defines it as “putting off doing something, especially out of habitual carelessness
or laziness.”  Edward Young, an 18th century poet is quoted as saying “procrastination is the
thief of time.” Truer words have never been spoken. When you add up the time lost in putting
off a task, it’s quite scary.

How does this apply to your daily life?
Well think about the report that you put off writing, the phone call you keep delaying, or the
project that sits half-complete. You may not realize that you’re procrastinating on these items
but each time you touch them and put them back down, you’re losing time.

Being a procrastinator is often one of the key reasons why people are seen as being
disorganized. The reality is that everyone procrastinates on something at some point, and it’s
not always due to lack of discipline. Sometimes, we procrastinate on a project when we aren’t
sure of its purpose. When we have tasks or responsibilities that always wind up at the very end
of our “To Do” list, we need to ask ourselves “why”.

Putting Off Procrastination
Old habits die hard. It’s easy to talk about wanting to change, but far more difficult to make
change. How do you beat procrastination? Start by taking the time to identify the reasons why
you procrastinate. The answers to the following question will help you identify the reasons why
you procrastinate and get you on the road to beating it.

  • Am I a project adrenaline junkie putting things off for the last minute to get a rush?
  • Am I doing this project/task for someone I don’t like or want to work with?
  • Am I being stretched out of my comfort zone by the task (is it too much of a challenge)?
  • Am I prepared with all the information/tools/details that I need to begin  this project?
  • Am I clear on how to start and complete this task? (Do I know what I’m doing?)
  • Am I waiting until I can do this perfectly?
  • Am I going to hate this task Is this going to be difficult, unpleasant, or painful in some way?
  • Am I in the mood do this?
