An Organizing Industry Leader says, “clutter and disorganization are unmade decisions.”
Each piece of paper or task out of place item is a decision that’s waiting for you to make it.
When you have a desk buried under paper, a calendar full of missed appointments and a head
full of pending tasks, you’ve got clutter and unmade decisions. The truth is that clutter comes
into your life without any assistance on your part and clutter will not go out of your life
without your assistance.
Most people think that clutter at work is commonly paper and electronic files. It can also
include a calendar full of appointments that are crammed in and ineffective. Clutter could also
be represented by people or commitments that don’t help you achieve your goals.
How do you tackle clutter and get organized when it feels like there’s no easy way out?
The answers to these questions will help you better understand your clutter and begin
figuring out how to get control of your paper, electronic files and time.
What's my vision?
Start by envisioning what you really want your space or calendar to be. What is the end goal
for you? Have a vision of how will you know when you’ve gotten rid of your clutter.
Why do I hold onto these things/papers/people/commitments?
Understand why you keep these things, time commitments or people around. Not that people
have to serve a purpose other than being there, but sometimes we allow others and their
visions to become more important than the things we need to do. We commit ourselves to
activities that we hate being a part of and that don’t make us happy. Consider how things
would be if you said ‘No” to these things.
What would happen if I let go/purge/cut back?
How bad would things get if you told someone “No” or cut back on your time commitments?
Would the world come to an end if you purged your files. If you haven’t been able to find that
piece of paper that you lost last year, do you really need it and does it really matter. Consider
what consequence you would face if you were to throw things out and begin eliminating those
things that have minimal impact. You’ll surprised how many things you’re holding onto that
you really don’t need.
What would I gain by cutting these things out?
Think of the liberating feeling of not being over committed. Think how great it will be to have
a clear desk and workspace that can be a clean slate for planning world dominance. Getting
rid of clutter can and will free up space and time. What opportunities will you be able to take
advantage of when you free yourself from clutter.
What happens if I don’t change?
Think of what life will be like if you don’t change. Do you want to continue being the way
you are or do you want change? Again, have a vision of how you’d like things to be and
consider if you want things to stay the same or change.
What do I have to do to get there?
Think of what changes you have to make to get there. Set goals and begin laying out a plan to
get there.
